ABOUT IDOLS
The reality talent show entertainment format Idols is the televised search for a new national solo pop idol by Fremantle Media and 19TV.
In 2001, it premiered in the UK as Pop Idol, produced by Thames and 19TV. Aside from garnering the highest ratings and record breaking phone votes, Pop Idol received The Rose d’Or 2002 (The Golden Rose of Montreux), Europe’s top television award, and the prestigious British Academy of Film & Television Award (BAFTA) for Best Entertainment Programme or Series.
Since then, Idols has become a worldwide phenomenon produced in almost three dozen countries. It has dominated television ratings and created new recording artists all over the world. More than 112 million viewers have enjoyed it and they have cast over 1.7 billion votes.
The idols format series continues to be a success no matter what title the series is called.
American Idol is the most popular series around the globe. In Slovakia the Slovensko hlada Superstar took a massive 41.1% share when it launched on STV in September 2004.
The third series of Idol in France, Novelle Star was the higest rated show on M6 in 2005 with 6.4 milion viewers. 1.47 milion viewers tuned in to watch the winner of the third series of Idol in Norway, which is the highest rated programme in TV2 history. There is Brazil, Pan-Latin Idol, Canadian and South African Idol.
